What Lakshya is
A child talks to Lakshya — out loud, or by typing — and it talks back. It explains ideas step by step, asks guiding questions, and checks understanding before moving on.
It is built around the Socratic method, so it teaches by asking rather than telling. The same tutor that helps a Class 3 child sound out a Telugu passage is the one that walks a Class 10 student through a chemistry equation. It grows with the child instead of being replaced every two years.
Today Lakshya covers Classes 1–10, mapped chapter by chapter to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh SCERT textbooks, in Telugu and English. Full national K–12 coverage across CBSE, ICSE and other state boards is the next phase of development.
The five things that make it work
Voice first
Voice removes the literacy barrier and changes the dynamic. It is easier to ask an embarrassing question out loud than to type it, and a shy child will talk before they will write. Text is there too, but voice is the default.
Socratic, not spoon-feeding
Lakshya's job is to teach a child how to approach a problem, not to hand over the answer. The goal is the child who closes the app and can try the next question alone.
Aligned to the child's board
The parent sets board, class, medium and subjects at enrolment. The child only ever sees their own syllabus. Telangana and AP boards today; CBSE, ICSE and other state boards in the next phase.
Built for the phone the family actually owns
Compressed audio, low latency, designed for 2G and 3G. On the roadmap: shared-phone profiles for siblings, offline sync, and missed-call voice access for feature phones.
Safe by design
Every child message is screened before the AI responds, with trained reviewers for edge cases. Conversations are encrypted and stored in India.
Measured, not gamified
Mastery is tracked topic by topic and reported to parents and teachers. No streaks, no leaderboards, no engagement metrics standing in for learning.
What a parent sees
Parents stay informed without hovering. Five things, and nothing that turns the house into a surveillance state.
Weekly summary
An automated WhatsApp voice note in plain language: what the child studied this week, what improved, where they are stuck.
Doubt queue
The questions the child flagged as "I don't get this", by subject. Useful for a conversation at dinner or a word with the class teacher.
Mastery by subject
What the child has nailed, what they are working on, what needs help — broken down by topic, not collapsed into one score.
Homework helper
The child photographs a worksheet or textbook question. Lakshya reads it and walks them through it, still without handing over the answer.
Real controls
Bedtime, daily minutes, content boundaries and trusted-adult approval. Sensitive changes need the parent's confirmation, not just a password.
Daily check-in
A short mood prompt at the start of a session. If a child's mood has been low for a while, the parent is told.
